Columbia Glacier has retreated more than 20 kilometres since 1980, one of the fastest withdrawals ever recorded on the planet. Its terminus once sat firmly across the entrance to Columbia Bay, anchored on a shallow submarine moraine.
When the ice slipped free of that ridge, the retreat accelerated and has not meaningfully stopped since. Vessels running a columbia glacier cruise from valdez now sail into water that was solid ice within living memory.
The glacier drains the Chugach Mountains, falling roughly 3,000 metres from the icefield to tidewater. It remains one of the last major tidewater glaciers in Prince William Sound, and among the fastest-moving ice on Earth, advancing at rates measured in tens of metres per day at the calving face. The bergs it sheds are dense, blue, and old — compressed for centuries before they reach salt water. In heavy ice years the brash pack thickens far out into the bay, and captains hold their distance accordingly.
Valdez itself is a rebuilt town. The 1964 Good Friday earthquake, magnitude 9.2, destroyed the original townsite and its waterfront; the community was moved roughly six kilometres west to firmer ground and reconstructed through the late 1960s. The harbour that now sends out Valdez glacier cruise departures is a product of that relocation, later reinforced by the terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline across the fjord. Sea otters, Steller sea lions, humpback whales, kittiwakes and harbour seals hauled out on ice floes make the passage as much a wildlife transect as a glacier viewing.
What the ice records is unusually legible here. Glaciologists have tracked Columbia continuously for decades, and its retreat is documented frame by frame in satellite imagery, aerial survey and photographic repeat studies. Neighbouring Meares Glacier, by contrast, is one of the few in the Sound still advancing — a working comparison visible on the same body of water. It crosses a fjord shaped by earthquake, oil, and retreating ice, where moraines, fjord walls and cirque basins are legible from the deck. The Sound covers some 3,800 square kilometres of protected water inside the Chugach National Forest, the second-largest national forest in the United States. Few coastlines change this visibly within a single human lifetime.
