Columbia Glacier has retreated more than 20 kilometres since 1980, one of the fastest recorded withdrawals of any tidewater glacier on earth. It remains, even so, among the largest in North America, spilling from the Chugach Mountains down to salt water in Prince William Sound.

The ice terminates at a fjord reachable only by hull or by float plane, and the harbour at Valdez — 112 North Harbor Drive — is the practical door. The geology rewards the crossing. Columbia is a calving glacier, meaning its terminus does not melt so much as break, shearing off slabs that enter the water with a report locals call white thunder. Those bergs drift seaward and clog the approach, so vessels navigate a moraine shoal and a field of loose ice rather than tying up at a face. Distance is a function of that ice on any given morning. What passengers see is a wall of blue-white rising from the fjord, striped with rock flour and lateral moraine, and behind it the icefield that feeds it.
The surrounding water matters as much as the ice. Prince William Sound holds one of the densest concentrations of marine wildlife in Alaska: Steller sea lions on the rookeries, sea otters rafting in kelp, humpback and orca pods working the deeper channels, kittiwake colonies stacked on cliff ledges by the thousand. Bald eagles nest along the shoreline in numbers that make them unremarkable. Valdez glacier cruise routes are drawn to pass these sites, and captains adjust in real time.
The town itself is young. Rebuilt four miles from its original site after the 1964 earthquake, Valdez functions as a working port — the terminus of the trans-Alaska pipeline sits across the bay — and the tour fleet shares the harbour with commercial fishing boats. Some columbia glacier boat tour tours run instead to Meares Glacier, an advancing glacier north of Columbia, where vessels can approach the face more closely; a sea kayaking option puts paddlers at water level among the bergs. The alternative is the Whittier fleet, crossing to the Sound's western arm and its 26 named glaciers. All of it is the same body of water, read from different angles.
